How Does Age Affect Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, or what we normally call periodontitis, is a more common problem than people think, and the truth is that it affects many people at some point in their lives. Sometimes, we don’t even realise it until the symptoms become very obvious, and that’s when we say: “Ugh, I wish I’d gone to the dentist sooner!” But did you know that age plays an important part in all this? Yes, as the years go by, our oral health changes too, and periodontitis can appear in different ways depending on the stage of life you’re at.
Periodontitis in young people: a less common problem, but just as important?
OK, it might not be that common to see teenagers or young adults with severe periodontitis, but that doesn’t mean they’re free of risk. At these ages, what we usually find is gingivitis, which is basically an inflammation of the gums, and if it happens to you, it’s nothing to be alarmed about… at least, not straight away. But that said, if you let it go and don’t treat it, it can end up as something much more serious, like periodontitis.
Have you noticed that sometimes your gums bleed after brushing? This, believe it or not, is one of the first signs that something isn’t right. And it’s very easy to avoid if you act in time: a good brushing routine, using dental floss and regular visits to the dentist can make a big difference. We don’t want you to be regretting in a few years’ time that you didn’t pay attention to those small details.
Periodontitis in adults: when age and lifestyle cross paths
Now, when we reach adulthood, things start to get a bit more serious. Here, the gums can already suffer more from the effects of stress, tobacco, or even simply from hormonal changes (especially in women, during pregnancy or the menopause, for example). And of course, things start to pile up… if we add an illness such as diabetes, the risk goes up even more.
You may have felt at some point that discomfort in the gums or the typical bad breath that won’t go away even with the best mouthwash. Those are warning signs you shouldn’t ignore. At this stage, periodontitis can advance quickly if you don’t take action, and believe us, you don’t want to lose teeth for not having caught it in time. An important detail: smoking not only affects your lungs or your heart, but it’s also one of the biggest enemies of the gums. We’ve seen it many times in patients: those who quit smoking notice improvements not only in their general health, but also in their mouth.
And yes, it might all sound a bit scary, but we don’t want to alarm you, we just want you to look after yourself. In any case, if you have any doubts about how your periodontal health is, we recommend a visit for a check-up and diagnosis. Better safe than sorry!
Periodontitis in older people: a general health problem?
As we get older, we find that periodontitis doesn’t only affect our mouth. This is important. Did you know that the health of the gums can be linked to other more serious health conditions, such as heart disease? It seems incredible, but it’s been proven that a healthy mouth can have a positive influence on general health. That’s why, in older people, it’s even more important to pay attention to the gums.
The bone loss around the teeth speeds up with the years, and you may not notice the first symptoms until, suddenly, a tooth starts to move. And of course, who wants to lose teeth if it can be avoided? Older people also tend to have problems with dry mouth (xerostomia), either because of age itself or the use of certain medications. This makes it easier for bacteria to build up, and you know what happens after that… periodontitis.
If you’re older and notice anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate, come and see us. We’re here to help you keep your oral health and, while we’re at it, improve your quality of life. And yes, even if you think it’s already too late, it never is. We can always do something.
Recommended treatments for periodontitis by age
At Clínica Dental Doctores Tarazona, we have treatments for every stage of life. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, the important thing is that we do an assessment and adapt the treatment to what you really need.
If we detect periodontitis in time, deep dental cleanings and other less invasive treatments may be enough to keep it under control. But if it’s already more advanced, don’t worry, we can also carry out more specific treatments such as scaling and root planing, or in more serious cases, periodontal surgery. The important thing is that, once the situation is stabilised, we keep up regular periodontal maintenance to stop the problem coming back.
And, please, don’t think that because you’re older there’s no solution. We’ve seen many cases where oral health improves incredibly with the right treatment and a good care routine at home.
Age has an effect, yes, but it’s no excuse for neglecting our mouth. In fact, at any age, if you follow a good hygiene routine and go to the dentist regularly, you can keep your gums healthy.
