What is Paediatric Dentistry?
Paediatric Dentistry is the part of dentistry that’s responsible for the dental treatment of child patients. Paediatric dentistry treatments consist of any dental treatment that we carry out on children, such as extractions or fillings, but with paediatric dentistry materials adapted to our youngest patients.
The Spanish Society of Paediatric Dentistry (SEOP) will therefore be the one that encompasses paediatric dentists or children’s dentists.
What’s the difference between paediatric dentistry and general dentistry?
General dentistry is the part of dentistry that’s responsible for treating the primary problems related to the mouth, teeth and other structures; however, paediatric dentistry is the speciality of dentistry more focused on the treatment of children, that is, it allows the diagnosis and treatment of the oral diseases of the baby, children and adolescents. To be able to carry out the diagnosis in paediatric dentistry and then its treatment, it’s necessary to create a relaxed environment where the child feels comfortable, since to carry out a tooth extraction in paediatric dentistry we’ll have to dedicate more time to our child patients to make the experience as pleasant as possible.

Children’s treatments, as with adults, encompass any treatment to look after our oral health, with fluoride in paediatric dentistry being one of the most in demand, since it’s necessary to carry out check-ups on the youngest patients, advising the application of fluoride in many of them. It’s also possible to carry out more complex treatments such as the placement of resin crowns in the event that the tooth is weakened or, ultimately, the tooth extraction in paediatric dentistry, in which it will often be necessary to prescribe paediatric amoxicillin.
It’s also common to have emergencies in paediatric dentistry at the clinic, since children frequently suffer dental trauma that needs a visit to the children’s dentist as quickly as possible.
